I received essentially this same warning message from both Carol Madalon and Gloria Schweiger: There will be a new children's movie out in December called "The Golden Compass". The movie has been described as "atheism for kids" and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled "His Dark Materials" that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises C. S. Lewis and the "Chronicles of Narnia". His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis' symbolisms of Christ that are portrayed in the Narnia series. For more info check out: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp Please consider a boycott of the movie and the books. Also, pass this information along to everyone you know. This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda of the movie ------United Way launches new referral service:Dial 211 info at http://www.211missouri.org/ -----Watch video: Poverty USA http://www.nccbuscc.org/cchd/povertyusa/tour2.htm ------Watch SVdP videos on u-tube http://www.youtube.com/SVdPUSA --------Life of St. Vincent video, 5 minutes on Spiritual Advisor Page ----e-mail From Charles Clayton (edited somewhat by JK): Hi, All! 11/12/07 Dianne Zygmunt--Please keep Dianne in your thoughts and prayers as she deals with a house fire that removed her from her home until further notice. She received a call today that her house was on fire, and we do not know the extent of the damage, only that the house is inhabitable and that the fire started from some electrical wiring. Dianne has been with the Society of SVDP for many years as the head receptionist and most recently with the Car Donations Program. She has been planning her retirement for next February of 2008. We will keep you posted on Dianne’s needs as the details become available. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers! Shari J. LeKane-Yentumi Office Manager
I have been set straight. Please do not send cards. I cannot remember if I checked with snopes.com, but this is an unwieldy problem for Walter Reed. Her "We don't need any more cards," a spokeswoman said. (You may select you own adverb here: She said it forcefully, vigorously or conclusively. All are correct.) But it turns out that Walter Reed officials are happy for you to send things other than cards.
So if you're inclined to send something to a recovering American soldier, how about a prepaid phone card, gas card or a book of postage stamps? Those items are actually useful, while Christmas greetings are ... well, they're nice. Except niceness by the ton can turn into a problem. Just ask the sick English lad.

Carmella Garza: member St. Margaret and former district treasurer. Please keep our sister Vincentian, Carmela Garza, and her family in your prayers. I received word earlier this evening that her brother, Mario, passed away at St. Louis University Hospital. Carmela has had the responsibility of taking care of her brother at her
home this past year.
May God give Carmela and her family comfort and strength at this difficult time, and may Mario be at
peace in the Lord. Jeff Goldone, president St. Margaret of Scotland Conference
Meeting minutes 10/06 SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT dePAUL SOUTH CENTRAL DISTRICT MEETING Minutes of April 19th Meeting The meeting, held at St. Clement of Rome parish, was called to order by President Joe Komadina. Paul Kohl, President of St Clement’s SVDP gave an introduction and Msgr Pieper, pastor of St. Clement’s, led the opening prayer. Joe Komadina read the spiritual reading from the writings of Fredrick Ozanam. The theme of the discussion will be "Working with Others" ecumenically. The treasurer’s report shows a balance of $5642 as reported by the new Treasurer Tom Stanton. A discussion on twinning by Tom Stanton took place. He sent out questions to the four district twinning contacts asking for feedback based on the 1st quarter. The questions asked to them were: 1. were they able to meet their needs from within their group and if not how often 2. where did they go when their group wasn’t able to meet their needs 3. total dollars they have provided to and/or received from conferences within their group 4. total dollars they have provided to and/or received from conferences outside their group 5. based on their experiences, what is their level of satisfaction with the process on a 1-5 scale. 6. based on their experiences, what should be changed to make the process more workable. The twinning project appears to be working but to continue ‘as is’ for another quarter. Two suggestions were proposed. One was that the district may want to come up with a policy/proposal to address extraordinary economic emergencies. The other was to expand the twinning to include other districts that have less funds. Sister Annalee Faherty, D.C. (Daughters of Charity) agreed to be the new spiritual advisor. Sister Annalee has been with the Daughters of Charity for 52 years. She has been with the Guardian Angel Settlement for 23 years. She gave a brief background about the Daughters of Charity and of its relationship with the SVDP Society through Vincent De Paul in the 1600’s. For the themed discussion, the conference broke into various ‘table’ groups to discuss how SVDP can foster an ecumenical approach to our work. After the discussion and a brief break, various individuals gave examples of what their conferences are doing currently. There were two more formal presentations given by Dave Murray of St. Anslem and Roy Maurer of Mary, Queen of Peace conferences. They spoke of their extremely successful fundraising efforts and of their ecumenical role. Miscellaneous remarks/discussions - The importance of thank you notes including thank you phone calls especially to our benefactors. And not to take our benefactors for granted. There were various talks about fundraising methods such as quarterly envelopes, creating a "poor box", "green bucket Sunday" where one parish in Florida did the visual approach of painting buckets greens where donations can be placed, and suggesting to people in lieu of flowers and gifts for occasions, to donate to SVDP. Also spoke of the SVDP national website where various items such as magnets, lapel pins, etc., can be purchased. The meeting was closed with a prayer by Sister Annalee. Respectfully submitted, Jevney Barrett Acting Secretary Attending: Representatives of seventeen of the twenty-eight conferences in the South Central District

A MESSAGE FROM THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT:
Thanks to all who have pitched in to make our district better over the last three years. Thanks especially to the officers, Roy Maurer, Jane McLaughlin (and her assistants: Jevney and Darlene), Carmella Garza and Tom Stanton who along with our Spiritual Advisors, Deacon Dan and Sister Annalee, generously gave their time, advice and support to the functioning of the district. Thanks, also, to Carol Madalon and Joyce Moran who joined in as advisors and twinning group coordinators.
A special thanks to the conferences which so generously hosted our meetings: St. Margaret, St. Joseph, St. Luke, St. Clement, St. Ambrose and Sacred Heart, Eureka.
It has been a wonderful and affirming experience to touch more closely the lives of my fellow Vincentians who quietly, anonymously, consistently and generously serve the poor. I have learned so much from my fellow conference presidents, and I hope I've been able to share some of that with all of you.
Joe Komadina
